Bio
Will Hall began his percussion career at the age of 10 when he started playing on a kit down the street from where he lived. Inspired by the “Grunge” movement from Seattle, bands like Alice and Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Sound-Garden gave him his first rhythmical bug.
His first formal experience was in middle school where he played in concert and jazz bands. This is when he met his first private teacher, Rick Kirkland (former drummer for Ray Charles and well known Jazz drummer). Under Rick Will studied classical percussion and jazz drumming.
Will attended Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (DASOTA) during high school where he continued his percussion studies. Growing away from the drum set and moving toward classical percussion, he was involved in the symphonic band, orchestra, marimba ensemble and played in three musical productions–Man of La Mancha, Oklahoma and Secret Garden–along the way. While attending DASOTA, Will played with numerous events at the school, around town and throughout Florida, Atlanta and New Jersey. As a member of the marimba ensemble, in 1998 he had the opportunity to play at PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) in Orlando.
After graduating from high school in 1999, Will took a break from music and devoted time to his other interest, Math. During his three years of Mathematics and Physics studies at the University of North Florida, he learned to play a new instrument that he had always wanted to try, the electric bass. Playing electric bass created a new, expressive outlet for him, and music became fun again. While practicing with his bass, Will discovered one of the most influential musicians in his life, Victor Wooten.
After studying Math for three years, Will returned to percussion study in the UNF music department. There he studied with Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra Principal Percussionist Charlotte Mabrey. Under Charlotte, he studied classical percussion with a focus on marimba literature.
Through UNF’s music department, Will played with the percussion ensemble, wind ensemble, orchestra, jazz band (playing percussion and vibraphone), chamber groups, and around the city with a percussion quartet. He graduated with a bachelores in Music and a minor in Mathematics in 2005 and was awarded the ‘Most Outstanding Musician Award’ for the 2004/2005 school year.
