Lars and the Real Girl
I will go see anything with Ryan Gosling in it. Ever since I saw the Notebook (yes I like the Notebook, I think there is even a t-shirt) I have kept my eye out for movies he has been in. Even stumbled upon(not the website) an older film, The United States of Leland, which was really good.
So Lars and the Real Girl is a story about a guy Lars(Ryan Gosling) that lives in the garage of the house his parents left to him and his brother. Lars being pretty socially awkward and hermit like decides that a relationship with a doll is something he wants to do. Through the movie his family and the community have to adapt with this new relationship. At first it is strange and awkward but by the end they treat the doll like a real person.
This movie is really funny and also really moving. It might seem a little slow at times but it is worth it. It is a great movie about community and family and what they will do for you because they love you, even if you are dating a life size plastic doll.
Rated PG-13

Thanks for this post. We’ve had this film sitting in its Netflix envelope since the week we moved, but haven’t watched it yet. I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Have you watched Half-nelson? He’s very good in that, too. Dark film.
I, too, am a fan of The Notebook, but want to make my own edit that cuts out all the framing bits with the older couple. The period stuff with Ryan and Rachel is excellent.
Speaking of Rachel, you should check out the Canadian TV show Slings & Arrows. Really wonderful stuff.

I did see Half Nelson. He was very good in it.
Totally agree about the Notebook. Glad to hear I’m not the only one who thought it could do without the older couples stuff. They would have to rename it though. New title could have something to do with the “house”.
